What is the best way to get in touch with my child's teacher?
Your child's teacher can be reached at school during the hours of 8:00am - 4:00pm.
The number is 773-9555.
They can be reached by email, which is checked daily.
What is the daily folder and Tuesday folder?
Daily folders will be sent home each day. Please review all
contents and return daily. We will do the same. If you have
notes, money, or important information to get to school, please
send it inside of the folder so that we will receive it. Please
do not ask your child to hand us notes and money. We will get
these items out of his/her folder.
We use Tuesday folders for sending home student work. These
folders are used for the entire year and should be sent back to
school the following day. Please treat these folders with care.
What if my child has a transportation change?
At the beginning of the year, you will need to let us know your
child’s usual mode of transportation from school to home. Any
time that the transportation plan changes, you must send a note
with the date, how your child is getting home and a contact
number in case there are any questions. We cannot send a child
home by a different mode of transportation without a written note
or a phone call to the office. A verbal change in transportation
from your child will not be accepted. Last minute phone calls to
the office for change of transportation should only be used for
emergencies. Please try to plan ahead. It is difficult for the
office to communicate transportation changes at the end of the
day.
What is appropriate for classroom snack?
We have a snack time each day. Please send a small,
healthy snack that can be consumed in 10 minutes. Great
snacks to send in are fruit, granola bars, cheese and crackers,
carrots, etc. If your child needs a utensil to eat their snack,
please make sure that you send one with the snack. Children are
encouraged to bring water bottles and will have access to the
classroom water fountain throughout the day. However, juice and
other drinks are not permitted with snack as they cause stains
and attract bugs. Please keep your child’s snack separate from
his/her lunch so that it is not consumed in the cafeteria.
Do you celebrate birthdays in school?
We know that birthdays are very important to children and their families. However, it is Wake County policy that celebrations should only be for academic activities. If you would like to send in something for your child’s birthday, please make sure that it is a non-food item. Examples include pencils, bookmarks, or small goodie bags. You can also donate a book to the classroom. It is Wake County Policy that no invitations are allowed to be handed out at school. Please use the class directory to mail out any invitations.
How is communication handled effectively?
We believe that a good family-teacher relationship is essential
to your child’s school success. Throughout the year we will
communicate with you through our class website, notes, telephone
calls, and newsletters. Please check the class website weekly.
Parent-teacher conferences will be held at the end of the first
and third quarters. We encourage you to contact us if you have
any questions or concerns at any time. You may call the school
at (919) 773-9555, email us, or send a note
in your child’s daily folder. E-mails and notes are generally
easiest as there is no direct line to our classroom.
What is the Kindergarten Health Assessment?
It is Wake County Police that children entering Kindergarten
receive immunizations prior to the start of school. There is a
grace period of no more than 30 days to have health assessments
turned in. If the school does not receive your child’s health
assessment, your child will not be allowed to attend school. If
you have any questions, please talk with our school nurse.
Why does my child need a change of clothes?
In Kindergarten we often have accidents, spill milk, paint our
shirts, find the mud on the playground, etc, etc, etc! So,
please send a complete change of clothes (shirt, pants, socks, &
underwear) in a gallon sized Ziploc or a grocery bag labeled with
your child’s name. We will keep the clothes at school until the
change of seasons, and then we will switch them out.
What does my child need for rest time?
Each child will need a large towel with their name on it for rest
time. We do not have the room to store rest mats. We will send
the towel home on Fridays to be washed. Please remember to
return them on Monday. Pillows and stuffed animals are not
allowed at rest time. We will only be resting for the first quarter
of of school. We will let you know when the towels are being sent
home for good!
How much does lunch cost?
Student lunches are $2.55 and milk alone is .50. If you plan on
having your child buy lunch daily, we recommend putting money
into your child’s lunch account so that your child doesn’t have
to keep up with their money every day. Please refer to the
school handbook for lunch account information. You are welcome
to come and eat with us in the cafeteria. Adult lunches do not
have a fixed cost; you are charged for each item you order
individually.
What happens during recess time?
As you know, this is a Kindergartener’s favorite part of the
day! Outside play is an important part of the Kindergarten
experience and we will go outside everyday, weather permitting,
for 30 minutes. Please send in a light jacket or sweater on cool
days. Most Kindergarteners like to get dirty so make sure that
your child wears clothes to school that you DO NOT mind getting a
little dirty! Please have your child wear appropriate footwear
for outdoor play.
What kind of backpack should my child have?
Please make sure your child’s book-bag is large enough so that
their Weekly folder (11x14), daily folder, lunch box and rest
towel will all fit inside. All of your child’s personal
belongings must be inside of his/her backpacks during dismissal
and arrival times. Please check your child’s backpack daily and
empty out unnecessary items. Please make sure that your child’s
backpack is labeled with his/her name.
What is the Parent/Teacher Communication form?
You will find a parent teacher communicator form in your child’s
daily folder in the next few weeks. This is meant to help us
communicate with you about your child’s day and should be checked
daily. When your child’s chart indicates a positive behavior,
please take a moment to talk with them about how proud you are of
their kindness and hard work. When your child’s chart indicates
that there was a problem, please talk with him/her about why they
were having trouble and what they can do to prepare for a better
day tomorrow. The questions/comments box in the middle of the
form can be used by both parents and teachers to communicate
additional information as needed.
What if I need to send medicine to school?
All medicine including over the counter drugs must be
administered through the office. Please do NOT let your child
bring medicine in his/her lunchbox or backpack. Parents need to
bring the medicine to school. Only the office staff can give
medicine. A form will be filled out in the office in order to
administer medications.
What do I do if my child is absent?
When your child returns to school, please send a
note letting us know the reason for the absence. All absences must be
marked unexcused unless we receive a note from home validating an excusable
absence. Please refer to the school handbook for more information. You may also use the MCES PTA app, and send us an absence note that way.
How do I volunteer in the classroom?
During the first six weeks of school we are working on getting
the children familiar with classroom procedures and
expectations. We do not allow parent volunteers during this
time. We would LOVE your participation during the remainder of
the year. We know that many people work and are not able to come
in during the school days, but we still expect involvement from
all parents in their child’s education. If you would like to be
an in-school volunteer, you must register and be cleared as a
volunteer. You can register in the front office or in
the media center. This needs to be done as soon as possible
because it sometimes takes several weeks to be approved.
Your child's teacher can be reached at school during the hours of 8:00am - 4:00pm.
